I did this over the space of about a week or so, as a birthday present for a close friend.
Started off with a basic sketch in Sketchbook Pro for the main landmarks, then laid down the main values and rendered a little. After that I took it into Photoshop to do the bulk of the work.
I worked off of a couple of photorefs we took at an open air concert. The penguin chick is a bit of an in-joke. This was printed at A4 size.
